Maternity & Child Welfare Association of Pakistan

The Maternity and Child Welfare Association of Pakistan was created in 1961 to focus the nation's attention on the fundamental importance of the health of women and children. MCWAP seeks to create enhanced awareness in both the private and public sector about the crucial importance of maternal and child health for the sound development of services.
For this purpose they aim to stimulate the development of quality health care services for this group. Thus, MCWAP establishes and facilitates community-based service outlets, which promote the health and welfare of families, with particular emphasis on women in the reproductive age group, infants and pre-school children. It began its operations in NWFP in 1969, Punjab in 1963 and Sindh in 1971.
All the Provincial and District Chapters of MCWAP are independent entities and registered as independent Associations but follow the same guidelines and constitution as MCWAP. These chapters have their own offices, governing body members, office bearers and staff etc. These are:

1. Maternity Child Welfare Association (MCWA) NWFP
2. Maternity Child Welfare Association (MCWA) Punjab
3. Maternity Child Welfare Association (MCWA) Sindh

Efforts are being concentrated on the provincial chapters to encourage them to organise district chapters with similar compositions and objectives. MCWAP and its provincial and district setup follow the following objectives. These are: to decrease the Infant Mortality Rates (IMR); to decrease Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR); to decrease the Crude Birth Rate (CBR); to decrease the Crude Death Rate (CDR); to increase the Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR); to decrease the Population Growth Rate (PGR); to train Health Care Providers Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) and Paramedics; to immunize infants, pre-schoolers and pregnant women. These objectives are achieved through integrated Maternity Child Health (MCH).
