Pakistan Polio program was initiated in 1998 as part of the global polio eradication initiative and our struggle to wipe off the crippling disease has faced some peculiar challenges. Despite being the only program in public health history of Pakistan that endured killings of almost a hundred of its frontline workers and security men, we have not been deterred by any means. The National Task Force headed by the Prime Minister has endorsed Polio eradication as a national emergency and the country program accordingly enjoys complete Government ownership by the Government across political parties and at all levels. For implementation, the programme is thoroughly guided by the National Emergency Action Plan; a strategic document revised yearly based on the evolving epidemiology.
