The purpose of the Medical Officer is to provide high-quality medical care, diagnosis, and treatment to patients, promoting health and well-being while offering clinical leadership and guidance to staff, patients, and team members. This role ensures comprehensive and compassionate healthcare services, assists in administrative tasks, participates in communication and education of staff and patients, complies with regulatory standards, and engages in peer review and performance evaluations.


Responsibilities

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In-Hospital Duties

  • Examine admitted patients in detail, including their history, to make provisional diagnoses, initiate treatment, and advise on relevant investigations.
  • Record complete histories and other relevant details of the patients in their charts.
  • Conduct rounds in the ward to communicate with patients and relatives, ensuring to examine all admitted patients at least once per duty period.
  • Collaborate with specialists regarding patient management and discuss urgent matters over the phone when necessary.
  • Explain the use and effects of prescribed drugs to patients.
  • Send written requests for consultations to other specialists and inform them via telephone to expedite the process.
  • Order and oversee investigations, ensuring they are conducted and results recorded as per SOPs.
  • Perform medical procedures such as vein section and chest tube insertion.
  • Assist specialists in performing more complex procedures.
  • Administer blood as per SOPs and be available to manage emergencies.
  • Ensure emergency tray contents are readily available.
  • Undertake life-saving measures, including CPR, as necessary.
  • Support nursing staff in patient management, especially in setting up IV lines.
  • Arrange for patient discharge upon improvement after a standard treatment period and upon specialist clearance.
  • Document duties performed in appropriate forms and registers.
  • Outpatient Duties

  • Examine patients directly reporting to the outpatient department (OPD) and record brief histories, findings, and probable diagnoses with treatment plans.
  • Advise on necessary investigations and prescribe medications for home use.
  • Refer patients to specialists as necessary and ensure they are seen by the appropriate healthcare provider.
  • Admit patients based on specialist advice.
  • Undertake life-saving measures as needed.
  • Document all duties performed in the appropriate forms and registers.
  • Admit serious patients in the absence of a specialist and inform them promptly.
  • Perform any other relevant tasks assigned by supervisors.
