The Lawyer is primarily responsible for providing legal support and representation to refugees and asylum seekers in accordance with humanitarian principles. This role involves handling court cases from initiation to final disposal, ensuring strict confidentiality and impartiality throughout. The Lawyer works closely with government authorities, United Nations organizations, and non-governmental organizations to advocate for the rights of vulnerable populations. The role requires preparing and submitting regular reports and developing detailed work plans in coordination with the team leader or field manager. The Lawyer must maintain a respectful and dignified approach when dealing with clients, offer legal counseling on protection issues, and facilitate access to legal aid and relevant services. This position demands a comprehensive understanding of Pakistani legal frameworks, especially as they relate to refugee and asylum laws. The Lawyer represents the organization in court and various stakeholder meetings, conducts legal awareness workshops, and supports capacity-building for judicial and law enforcement officers. The role includes meticulous case management, monitoring ongoing legal matters, and ensuring timely follow-up on pending cases. Willingness to travel within project areas and work beyond typical hours, including rotational standby duties on weekends and holidays, is essential. This role does not involve direct team management but requires strong coordination skills and the ability to work effectively within a structured, target-oriented environment.
Responsibilities

  • File and pursue court cases on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers until their final resolution.
  • Achieve project targets and indicators as outlined in the project proposal.
  • Develop and maintain strong liaison with government bodies, United Nations organizations, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Prepare, compile, and submit daily, weekly, bi-monthly, and monthly reports to the team leader or field manager.
  • Design and implement detailed work plans for project activities in consultation with team leadership.
  • Ensure strict compliance with principles of confidentiality, neutrality, and impartiality regarding client information and cases.
  • Monitor protection issues regularly and provide appropriate legal assistance.
  • Represent the organization in courts, ensuring all appearances uphold the organization's mandate respectfully and professionally.
  • Offer free legal aid and assistance in cases related to the Foreigners Act, preventive laws, civil law, tenancy, and family matters.
  • Provide clear and compassionate legal advice and counseling to refugees and asylum seekers relating to various protection challenges.
  • Assist clients with the preparation of legal documents, including those related to loss of identification cards, birth registration, and marriage certificates.
  • Organize and facilitate legal clinics and awareness sessions within project areas to educate populations about their rights and governmental policies.
  • Conduct capacity-building workshops for police, judicial officers, and other stakeholders to enhance understanding of refugee rights and protection issues.
  • Arrange meetings and maintain communication with various government authorities and other relevant organizations to advocate for client interests.
  • Represent the organization in meetings with UN agencies and other entities as necessary.
  • Register new court cases promptly and ensure proper follow-up on pending litigation.
  • Monitor legal cases referred to other organizations to ensure appropriate handling and resolution.
  • Disseminate accurate and updated information about government procedures and legal statuses among refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Assist refugees and asylum seekers in accessing available governmental and other stakeholder services.
  • Maintain comprehensive records and data relating to court cases, legal advice, counseling sessions, and project activities on a daily basis.
  • Provide a supportive and friendly environment for clients, encouraging open communication about their legal concerns.
  • Refer clients to additional services or resources when appropriate to ensure holistic support.
  • Adhere to the objectives and performance indicators outlined for the project consistently.
  • Remain available for standby duties on weekends, national holidays, and festival days on a rotational basis.
  • Perform any other ad-hoc duties assigned by the supervisor to support project success.
