Plants are very important for human beings because thousands of plants are being used as medicines. Due to great Importance of plants in medicine particularly as antioxidant this research project has been planned to study the antioxidant activity and polyphenolic contents of Gemo and Native extract of Terminalia belerica. The extracts were prepared by using methanol and acetone. Polyphenolic contents were measured by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The highest phenolic contents (970 mg in galllic acid equivalent/g of dry weight of plant extract) were found in the methanolic extract of fresh leaves mercerated for 24 hrs and lowest phenolics (60 mg in gallic acid equivalent/g of dry weight of plant extract) were found in the methanolic extract of dry fruit mercerated for 2 hrs. Different antioxidant assays were employed for the determination of antioxidant activity. The highest reducing power was shown by BHT followed by the extract of mercerated extract of fresh plant material. The results of superoxide radical scavenging assay showed that the methanolic extract of fresh leaves exhibit highest % inhibition than other extracts but less than BHT (standard). The results of linoleic acid system and ABTS decolourization assay showed the same trend. The % inhibition in all the assays was increased by increasing the concentration of extract. In linoleic acid system % inhibition was increased by increasing incubation time. The results of present investigation suggest that Terminalia bellerica extracts are rich in phenolic contents and exhibit strong antioxidant activity. The extracts are natural antioxidant against lipid peroxidation, free radical scavengers. So, the extracts of Terminalia bellerica can be used in medicines as antioxidants.

Effective removal of Surfactants using coagulation as treatment technology

Surfactants are among the most versatile products of chemical industry. These are synthetic organic chemicals used in high volume in different fields of our life. The use of surfactants throughout the world is increasing day by day due to which its role is increasing in environmental pollution. Among ecological toxicants, synthetic detergents released into aquatic ecosystems have a potential effect on fauna and flora. Keeping in view, the toxicity and environmental problems of surfactants this project has been designed to assess the removal of surfactants form waste water. Sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was selected for experiments. Coagulation technology was used for surfactant removal. Methylene blue active substances (MBAS) assay based on UV-visible spectroscopy was used to evaluate the percentage of anionic surfactants. Total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was used for the estimation of organic contents in the sample. Maximum percentage removal was shown by Al2(SO4)3 at 100ppm SDS concentration, shaking condition, 15 minutes time, coagulant concentration 30 mg/100mL and at pH 8 and it was 79%, while under these optimized conditions alum showed 70% SDS removal. It was concluded after conducting all the experiments that Al2(SO4)3 is better coagulant than alum and could be used for treatment of waste water.

Phytochemical studies on the bioactive constituents of H. oblongifolium

Hypericum oblongifolium is a flowering plant in Hypericaceae family. It has been traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine for treatment of various diseases. A series of pharmacological properties, have been associated with this plant. This plant has been proved to be act as anti-ulcer, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory agent. The plants also contain compounds which are chymotrypsin, urease and lipoxygenase inhibitors. H. oblongifolium have also been reported for its antispasmodic, bronchodilator, hypotensive and anti-myocardial infraction behavior. In the present study H. oblongifolium was selected for the identification and isolation of medicinally important natural products present in it. From the chloroform and ethyl acetate soluble fractions of H. oblongifolium sixteen compounds have been isolated, out of which four were considered as new, while twelve natural products as known compounds. Their structures were elucidated by the use of sophisticated modern spectroscopic techniques (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HMBC, HMQC, 1H-1H- COSY, NOESY, HREIMS and HR-FAB-MS) and several chemical tests.
