Automatic Loading Detection and Power Factor Correction of 3 Phase system

Abstract-- In modern era, the demand of electrical energy is increasing dramatically. Progressively, inductive loads are being used in industry and domestic applications. Inductive loads are dominant for low power factor in power system. Efficient usage of the real power is very indicative in developing an efficient power system. Also, electricity supplier penalizes the customers for low power factor and creates financial crises. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method to enhance power factor of a three phase system automatically. Automatic Power factor correction (APFC) technique is used to counter the unwanted and undesirable effects of electric loads that causes the low power factor. This paper emphasizes on the technique which utilizes an Arduino platform as a controller along with capacitor bank for enhancement of power factor. Initially, the power factor is calculated by Arduino. For low power factor, Arduino switches the required capacitors automatically to have an improvised power factor. This results in enhanced stability and efficiency of the system. Consequently, the technique of power factor correction results in the reduction of total cost for both; the customers and suppliers of energy.
