Summary

The Donation Coordinator is responsible for counseling cornea donor families at donor hospitals and coordinating with Al Shifa Trust Eye Bank and the donor hospital for the retrieval of corneas using the Hospital Cornea Recovery Program (HCRP) model. The Donation Coordinator reviews death referrals, approaches families for consent, coordinates recovery of consented cornea donors with clinical staff, and conducts follow up with the donor hospital and family. The position is also responsible for awareness campaigns both within the donor hospital and elsewhere.

This position is responsible for determining donor corneal tissue suitability based on Al Shifa policies and Medical Standards.

Essential Job Functions

  • Communicate sensitively with donor families to provide information about eye donation and obtain consent for tissue retrieval.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to donor families throughout the donation process.
  • Review donor medical history to determine if ocular tissue is eligible for surgical transplantation.
  • Utilize proficient understanding of medical terminology to review patient medical records, lab results and diagnoses in detail in order to make critical decisions.
  • Collaborate with hospital administration, medical staff, and other medical coordinators to ensure a smooth functioning of the HCRP.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to promote a culture of eye donation within the hospital.
  • Conduct regular assessments to identify potential cornea donors admitted to the hospital.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of donor referrals, consent forms, and other relevant records.
  • Maintain confidentiality of donor information and comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate logistics for corneal retrieval procedures.
  • Liaise with eye bank staff to facilitate the timely transfer of retrieved corneas for processing and transplantation.
  • Adhere to established protocols and guidelines for corneal retrieval to maintain quality and safety standards.
  • Participate in training sessions and quality improvement initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of the HCRP.
  • Perform accurate and efficient data entry of patient medical and social history.
  • Provide superior customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and adapt to changes in the profession through continuing education, workshops, and other professional educational opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in medical field preferred.
  • Social work or public health background strongly recommended

Knowledge: Comprehension of medical terminology. Proficiency in MS Office and Adobe. Proficient with technology and medical records. Valid driver’s license.
