POSITION OBJECTIVES

Develop her/his own robust research and policy outreach agenda in research program. Undertake original research around selected themed within the overall research program approved by the Board of Governors of SDPI. Administer research projects. Mentor mid-career researchers. Produce research publications in the area of expertise. Prepare and submit project proposals for fund raising.

Core Responsibilities & Duties

Research and Policy Outreach:

Develop and implement a research and policy outreach program to promote sustainable development.
Conduct original research on selected themes within the Institute's approved research program.
Prepare and submit project proposals to various partner agencies.
Secure funding for research programs, generating at least US$175,000 annually.

Research Management:

Manage and administer research projects.
Supervise project staff and ensure the production of high-quality narrative reports.
Coordinate and manage collaborative research projects.
Conceptualize and design planning meetings, research contracts, deadlines, and standards for research papers and publications.

Knowledge Dissemination:

Conceptualize and design research conferences, workshops, seminars, and other dissemination activities.
Edit and compile research papers for publication.
Respond to requests for policy advice from the public and private sectors.
Contribute to the SDPI training unit by delivering at least one 3-day or three 1-day courses annually.
Participate in the weekly seminar series.

Institutional Representation:

Represent SDPI at national or international seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia, and policy-making forums.
Contribute to electronic and print media on issues related to sustainable development, public policy, and governance.

Internal Contributions:

Contribute to the research and other work of the SDPI research faculty.
Publish at least two papers annually in the Institute's working paper series and research reports.
Deliver a minimum of two seminars annually.

Occasional Significant Duties

Participate in the meetings of the Fellows Research Council.
Assist in the administration of the Institute, by serving on committees or otherwise, as determined by the Fellows Research Council.
Discharge any other related administrative or management responsibilities assigned by the Executive Director/ Fellows Research Council.

Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) is a leading policy think tank that has been in operation since 1992. Sustainable Development Policy Institute's main responsibility in the mandate is to conduct policy advice and policy oriented research. The other part of the mandate is concerned with the implementation of policies and programs, strengthening the civil society, disseminating research findings and contributing to the building up the national research capacity and infrastructure. Hence, SDPI in its mandate differs from other think tanks, in that it will not only recommend but also help implement.SDPI defines sustainable development as the enhancement of peace, social justice and well-being within and across generations. SDPI produces knowledge that can enhance the capacity of government to make informed policy decisions and to engage civil society on issues of public interest. The Institute acts as both a generator of original research on sustainable development issues and as an information resource for concerned individuals and institutions. SDPI's function is thus two-fold: an advisory role fulfilled through research, policy advice and advocacy; and an enabling role realized through providing other individuals and organizations with resource materials and training. SDPI's research program is multi-disciplinary and problem-oriented. It is an iterative and flexible program that evolves and changes with policy needs, research capacity and interest.
