DESIGN CALCULATIONS FOR DESULFURIZATION SYSTEM USING SEAWATER

This project involves discovering new techniques and integrating the older technologies used for Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD). The increase in use of coal and power plants being built near seashores led us to the idea to use seawater for FGD, seawater being alkaline in nature have the ability to neutralize acidic substances including liquids, gases and even solids. Since seawater is readily available it can be used as a solvent for the treatment of flue gas, the effluent produced after the flue gas treatment has a pH of around 6.5 which is near to the pH of water which is 7, therefore the effluent could easily be disposed of back into the sea without much effect on the marine life. This operation requires a gas/liquid contacting equipment. Although previous research referred to the use of spray scrubbers however results showed that they were not feasible for larger amounts of sulfur dioxide produced, our research, however is focused on using packed column scrubbers with 99% operational efficiency. Mathematical calculations were made to give a design of FGD system using seawater and results were calculated by creating different scenarios in order to observe the changes during the process. Calculations were made for different amount of fuel burnt with higher sulfur content, temperature change in the flue gas before its treatment, changes in column height with mass transfer co-efficient and effect of decline in system performance by reducing the operational efficiency and changes were observed in flue gas flowrates, density of the flue gas, desired outlet concentration. diameter and height of the column.
