K-electric Limited formely known as Karachi Electric Supply Company Limited (KESC) is at the present the only vertically-integrated power utility in Pakistan that manages the generation ,tranmission and distribution of electricity to the city.It produces electricity from its own generation units with an installed capacity of 2341 MW.It also has power purchase agreements for 1021 MW from various IPPS such as WAPDA,KANUPP etc.
The company covers a vast area of over 6500 square kilometers and supplies electricity to all the industrial ,commercial, agriculture and residential areas that come under its network, comprising over 2.2 million customers in Karachi and in the nearby towns of Dhabeji and Gharo in Sindh and Hub, Uthal, Vindar and Bela in Balochistan.
I have almost visited Bin Qasim Power Plant 1 which is a thermal power plant which uses steam to produce electricity. It is a plant in which the prime mover is steam driven.Water is heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which drives an electrical generator. After it passes through a turbine, the steam is condensed in a condenser and recycled to where it was heated this is known as Rankine cycle. The greatest variation in the design of thermal power stations is due to different fossils fuels resources generally used to heat the water.
During 4 weeks of internship I have understood the working and learnt the following process involved in the setup.
• How Electricity Produced
• Functionality Of Group Of Panels In Electronic And Control Room
• Process Of Boiler
• Air And Flue Gas Process
• Thermal Cycle Of Power Plant
• Instrumentation And Control
• Signal Conditioning
• Calibration
I have learnt and experienced a lot about practical implementations of the theories learnt during class. The people at BQPS 1 are very helpful and always ready to give an explanation of about the procedures and technologies being employed. It was truly an amazing experience of learning with the Professionals
