My purpose is to acquire quality training and clinical
experience to further polish my clinical skills and serve humanity to my best.
As a Medical Officer at QMC Multan, I play a pivotal role in the Orthopedic clinic's operations. My responsibilities include
admitting patients from the outpatient department, meticulously preparing them for surgery, overseeing all pre-
operative and post-operative care, and conducting assessments to ensure patient stability before discharge.
Collaborating closely with Prof. Dr. Ghulam Haider, a distinguished Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, I participate in
morning rounds to formulate daily plans and optimize patient care strategies. This role has allowed me to refine my
clinical skills, demonstrate leadership in medical decision-making, and uphold the highest standards of patient safety
and satisfaction.
I worked as a house officer in Nishtar Hospital Multan. Nishtar Hospital is a teaching hospital of Nishtar Medical College,
located in Multan, Pakistan. It is a tertiary care hospital, serving a large population of South Punjab, adjoining areas of
Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Hospital's total bed capacity currently stands at 1,800 which is one of
the largest in the country. Hospital now has 24 departments and divisions, over 31 wards, a burn unit, an outpatient and
Accident & Emergency Department, in addition to 30 operation theaters.
HERE I WORKED IN 4 DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS, DETAILS OF WHICH ARE BELOW:
General Medicine (03/06/2022 to 02/09/2022)
My duties in the department of General Medicine included the following:
Attending the morning handover.
Taking patient history, performing relevant clinical examinations, making differentials and formulating a
management plan and discussing it with the consultant and then following the finalized management plan
advised by the consultant.
Discussing patients with the consultant before the ward round.
Attending the ward round; presenting cases and noting down the orders.
Following orders from the rounds. This included the following:
Simple procedures like IV cannulation, blood sampling, NG tube and Urinary catheter insertion
Clerking
Making drug charts.
Monitoring vitals.
Requesting imaging scans.
Chasing reports.
Making referrals to other departments.
Making discharge summaries.
Making calls to other departments and Documenting everything in patient files.
Counselling the attendants regarding care at home.
We had OPD weeks where we had patient consultations along with the Trainee Residents – Endocrinology OPD,
Haematology Clinic, General OPD
In the ER we worked in teams led by a Consultant which included a batch leader and Trainee residents. I had the
opportunity to see a wide range of patients with medical illnesses. To name a few – Ac. coronary syndrome, Heart
failure, DKA, Stroke, Meningitis, Pneumonia, Asthma and COPD exacerbation, Upper GI Bleed, Gout, Ac. Renal
failure, CLD, Gastroenteritis, Electrolyte Imbalance, Poisoning and overdose, other Infectious and Haematological
diseases.
Nephrology and Dialysis (03/09/2022 to 02/12/22)
In the Nephrology Department, I performed duties in In-patient, outpatient and dialysis department.
In In-Patient Department
Took Vitals of patients including BP, Pulse rate, Temp, Fasting Blood Sugar, Input and Output record and
Weight.
Presented allocated beds to consultants during morning round and carrying out round orders like sending
Labs, changing dressing of CV catheter, sending calls for opinion to various department and getting
appointment for Renal scans.
Assisted residents in procedures like hemodialysis catheter insertion, doing renal biopsies and urinalysis,
ensuring adherence to medical protocols.
Made discharge certificates.
Maintained patient file and record and updating drug chart when required.
In Nephro OPD:
Assisted Medical Professionals in diagnosing various Renal diseases.
Ordered various investigation required for Patient Diagnosis
Admitted patients to the ward having complex renal diseases or patients in need for hemodialysis
In Dialysis Unit
Assisted dialysis technicians in preparing dialysis machine and equipments for HD.
Passed hemodialysis catheters to the patients.
Ordered routine investigations of the patients on dialysis
Gave dialysis appointment to the patients of different wards after assessing them on bedside.
Monitored vital signs and reported any significant changes to my residents.
Participated in educational sessions and training to expand knowledge of dialysis and patient care
Trauma and Orthopedics Surgery (03/12/2022 to 02/03/2023)
In the Trauma and Orthopaedics Department, I performed Duties in the in-patient, out-patient, and emergency
departments.
In the in-patient department:
Attending the morning handover.
Reviewing in-patient beds allocated to me.
Presenting cases to the consultant in the morning round, formulating and discussing possible management
plans and executing finalized treatment plans of the consultants for the beds assigned to me.
Following up on round orders.
Maintaining patient files and records.
Requesting and chasing patient investigations.
Making discharge summaries.
During my long calls – every third day, I had to prepare patients for the next OT list. This involved pre-op
assessment, investigations and patient fitness for surgery/anaesthesia.
In the Operation Theatre
Assisted in many operations like external fixation with ilizarov, internal fixation, Inserting Knails, K-wires
and many operations dealing with crushing limbs injuries and limbs amputation.
Obseved following Procedures:
Debridement of skin/muscle/bone/fracture.
Hemiarthroplasty & Total Hip Replacement.
DDH.
Attending patients in the recovery room.
Post-op ward round.
Post-op wound care including dressing and drains.
Removal of support implant.
Knee replacement
Repair of femoral neck fracture.
In the Emergency Department:
We managed patients in teams led by a consultant with Trainee Residents and House surgeons. In the ER, I
assisted in dealing with:
Open and closed fractures.
Compartment Syndrome.
Multiple Long Bone Fractures and Unstable Pelvic Fracture.
MUA of Hip and shoulder Joint Dislocations.
Did skills like dressing of the wounds, stitches, and POP casts.
In the out-patient clinic:
I checked patients with common orthopaedic conditions like Osteoarthritis, Frozen Shoulder joint,
Malunion of Fractures, Infected wounds and follow up cases of surgeries under the supervision of the
consultants, taking history, performing clinical examination and ordering investigations and making
treatment plans with the guidance of the consultants.
General Surgery (03/03/2023 to 02/06/2023)
During my internship in GENERAL SURGERY DEPARTMENT
Worked with both indoor and outdoor patients.
History taking, examination and management of most of the common conditions like diabetic foot, cellulitis,
chronic pancreatitis and intestinal obstruction, Hyperthyroidism, cholecystitis, hemorrhoids.
In Surgical Emergency
I managed emergency cases like acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, acute pancreatitis, acute limb
ischemia, trauma, burn, obstructed and strangulated hernia, pneumothorax, bowel
obstruction,peritonitis,acute airway obstruction,gastrointestinal perforation, testicular torsion and
urinary retention.
I also dealt with poly trauma patients and resuscitated them and stabilized the fractures before referring
them to the orthopaedic department for definitive management.
In Surgical OPD
I was responsible for taking detailed history, performing relevant examinations, presenting cases to the
consultants and discussing possible management plans. In the OPD, we saw patients with minor surgical
ailments, follow up cases and patient referrals.
In the In-Patient Ward
I was responsible for daily morning rounds, presenting cases to consultants, formulating and discussing
possible management plans and executing finalized treatment plans of the consultants for the beds
assigned to me, and following up on round orders.
Maintaining patient files and records.
In Operation Theater
I assisted in many surgeries like herniorrhaphy, hernioplasty, appendectomy, laparotomy, laparoscopic
and open cholecystectomy, thyroidectomy, below knee amputation.
Attending patients in the recovery room,Post-op ward round.
Post-op wound care including dressing and drains.
Counselling the patients and attendants regarding wound care at home.
Performed skills like IV cannulation, venipuncture, catheterization, NG tube, chest intubation and incision
and drainage under supervision.
Learned different types of skin suturing techniques and applied skin sutures under supervision.
