Maternity department
Professional Responsibilities
Supervision of LHV staff with all aspects of maternity care
Ensuring adequate handover of patients to oncoming staff
To accompany patients when transferring between departments
Attending regular team meetings
Participating in training sessions
Keeping the labor room stocked and tidy
Participating in filling our daily consumption sheet
Documentation of antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care in nursing notes
Carrying our daily/ weekly checking of equipment.
Assisting with weekly drug order and monthly stock inventories
Participating in filling our daily consumption sheets and re-ordering stock if required
Checking and ordering of weekly stock in the assessment room
Collaborating with cleaning staff to maintain a good standard of hygiene in the maternity department
Maternity Care
Assisting doctors in the assessment room when a patient is referred with patient cares which include drawing blood, cannulation, haemocue, blood glucose testing, and urinalysis.
Caring for women with missed abortion
provide early labor care under the supervision of medical staff
Carrying out an abdominal palpation on admission to establish fetal presentation, lie and position.
assess progress of labor, i.e. strength and frequency of contractions
Conducting normal deliveries.
Performing vaginal examinations
Taking and recording vital signs during: early labor, active labor and postpartum period, as per msf protocol.
Auscultation of fetal heart during first and second stage as per msf protocol
Using a Partograph in labour to monitor and document the progress of labor.
Regularly auscultation of the fetal heart during labor and delivery as per msf protocol
Administration of oral medications under direct supervision of a doctor.
Administration of oxytocin in the third stage under direct supervision of a doctor
Recognizing and assisting with management of obstetric emergencies
Informing doctor of abnormal progress of labor/ complications of labor
Assisting Doctor with complicated deliveries
Assess the need for episiotomy and perform episiotomy if indicated
perform artificial rupture of membranes if indicted
Suturing of episiotomy and second degree vaginal Perineal tears
recognize problems in the second stage of labor
Safe management of the third stage of labor
assist in the management of Obstetric emergencies
conduct basic neonatal resuscitation.
Receiving baby at caesarian section and providing basic resuscitation
Completing birth register
Listens to patients complaints and informs doctor, supervisor
Patient Care - Postnatal Period
Monitoring/recording of blood loss, vital signs, uterus, bladder care and general wellbeing in the immediate postpartum period.
Perform postnatal checks on a daily basis and prior to discharge
promote early breastfeeding and skin to skin contact within first hour of birth
Assistance with breastfeeding as required
Recognizing and responding to problems immediately postpartum
Informing doctor of complications during postpartum period
Health promotion – postnatal care and advice to women
Providing advice to women on the signs of postpartum infection and importance of accessing medical care/ follow
Care and Monitoring of Newborn Baby
Maintaining temperature and checking respirations as required
Carrying out newborn check within first 24 hrs of birth including birth weight
Regular observation of baby to detect any abnormal conditions i.e., infection, sepsis, hypoglycemia, and hyperthermia.
Administration and documentation of vitamin K and routine vaccinations within first 24 hours
Observation and documentation of vital signs, colour, and urine output on newborn observation chart
Care and observation of a small or sick baby as per msf protocols
Perform blood glucose monitoring for baby if required
Dealing emergencies.
Provide antenatal and postnatal care to patients.
Conducting safe and clean deliveries.
Assists c.sections.
Provide care to patients after surgeries.
Daily fellowup of medication.
Check vitals of patients.
Awareness sessions regarding Gender base violence.
Door to door vaccination.
