STUDY OF PRODUCTION AND PROTECTION PRACTICIES OF MANGO AS ADOPTED BY MANGO

The Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is the most economically important fruit in the Anacardiaceae family. Other important members of this family include cashew and pistachio. The mango is the most important foodstuff for inhabitants of the tropics after the Banana. There are 150 verities of mangoes produced around the World (FAO, 2002). The main mango growing districts in the Sindh are Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad and Thatta (Anonymous, 2006). Pakistan is also a major exporter of mangoes, with an export of approximately 80,000 tons annually, being the third largest exporter in the world. Production is centered in two regions, the Punjab and the Sindh, producing 67% and 32% of the total production, respectively. All varieties grown in Pakistan are of Indian origin and are characterized by high brix and aroma (Collins, et al. 2006). There is a yield gap of mango between research station and farmers field of Mango. The yield difference may be attributed to the fact that growers are not following recommended Mango production and protection practices. Hence the study is designed to identify the production and protection technologies as adopted by Mango growers. The study will be conducted in Taluka Hyderabad.
